This semester-long project is focused on magic. The theme of magic is not limited to the subject matter, but also the medium. Photography, especially in the darkroom, reminds me of alchemy (noun): “a seemingly magical process of transformation, creation, or combination.” The process of film/paper being brought into the dark room is transformative, capturing light and putting it into a physical form. I like that the process is somewhat visible in the photos, such as the grainy effect of the film. An artist I took inspiration from was Daido Moriyama, specifically his high-contrast black-and-white photographs, as I found them captivating and a little haunting.

This work consists of ceramic pieces in photograms, where at a single-fired state, they are somewhat transparent, like ghosts of clay.
